Schoolchildren in the Whittier area are doing better in school this year thanks to Assistance Leagues Dental Care program. Launched in 1981, this program provides emergency dental care to children who are uninsured and cannot afford dental care. Dental care is provided by dentists in the Whittier area who are members of the California Dental Association and wish to help the Assistance League with this program. The children are examined and referred to the Assistance League by the schools. Committee members meet with parents, process some procedures and make appointments. The members also meet with the child and the parents at the participating dentist's office. Ten local dentists provided dental services to 17 patients during 44 visits in 2018-2019. Their dentists have dealt with cavities, extractions, pulpectomies and even root canals. Since 1987, members of the Help League have also performed in an educational puppet show called "Tell the Tooth". It is passed on to all second grade students in 4 local school districts. Using animal puppets, they learn about good dental hygiene and preventive care. Local dentist Dr. John Sudick provides the children with a new toothbrush and the Assistance League supplies toothpaste and floss. The dental committee collected 1900 packages. This has been a very successful program for local children. The show was presented to 27 schools in 4 school districts, involving about 2,000 students during the school year.
